Family Therapy for Veterans

Family Therapy for Veterans: Rebuilding Trust and Strengthening Support Systems

Healing from trauma, depression, or anxiety doesn’t happen in isolation. At Patriot PowerUP, we recognize the powerful role that loved ones can play in a veteran’s recovery. Our family therapy option gives veterans and their support network the opportunity to heal together—improving communication, reducing conflict, and creating a more supportive home environment.

Family therapy is entirely optional and tailored to each veteran’s needs. “Family” may include:

  • Spouses or romantic partners
  • Parents or siblings
  • Adult children or other chosen family

Some veterans choose to include family early in treatment, while others wait until they’re further along in their journey. Our approach is flexible and always centered around the veteran’s comfort and readiness.

Why Family Therapy Matters in Veteran Recovery

Military service often affects family dynamics—especially when a veteran is coping with PTSD, TBI, or substance use. Common issues may include:

  • Difficulty expressing emotions
  • Miscommunication and withdrawal
  • Strained trust or codependency
  • Confusion about how to support a loved one with mental health challenges

Family therapy can help:

  • Clarify roles and expectations
  • Address past pain in a safe, structured environment
  • Equip family members with tools to support long-term healing
  • Build mutual empathy and reduce feelings of isolation

What Family Therapy at Patriot PowerUP Looks Like

Our licensed clinicians facilitate family sessions that may include:

  • Conflict resolution and boundary setting
  • Education about trauma, TBI, or mental health conditions
  • Goal setting and relapse prevention planning
  • Communication skill-building

Sessions may take place in person (when possible), virtually, or by phone. We meet families where they are and create a space where both the veteran and their loved ones feel heard and respected.

The Role of Family in Residential Care

While Patriot PowerUP is primarily focused on veteran-centered treatment, we believe healing often accelerates when the home environment is aligned with recovery goals. That’s why we:

  • Offer family therapy as an integrated but optional part of our care plan
  • Encourage families to participate in aftercare and discharge planning
  • Provide resources for ongoing support after the veteran returns home

If you’re in crisis or feel unsafe, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. You can also call the Veterans Crisis Line at 988, then press 1.
