Group Therapy for Veterans
Group Therapy for Veterans: Community-Based Healing Through Shared Experience
For many veterans, one of the most powerful elements of recovery is realizing: “I’m not alone.” Group therapy at Patriot PowerUP fosters connection and trust among veterans who share similar experiences, struggles, and goals.
As part of our residential program, group sessions are led by trauma-informed clinicians and supported by peer mentors—veterans who understand the weight of military service and the road to healing.
Why Group Therapy Works for Veterans
Military life creates unique bonds. Group therapy builds on that sense of camaraderie to:
- Normalize trauma and reduce shame
- Create a sense of belonging
- Build accountability and mutual support
- Improve communication and relationship skills
“Group therapy gave me the courage to speak my truth—and know I was heard.” — Navy Veteran, Patriot PowerUP alumnus
Conditions We Address in Group Therapy
Veteran-focused group therapy is designed to support those managing:
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Depression and anxiety
- Grief and survivor’s guilt
- Substance use or dual diagnosis
- Moral injury or identity loss
Topics are selected based on the needs of the group and rotate to address emotional regulation, trauma processing, interpersonal healing, and recovery strategies.
Structure of Group Sessions
Each group is facilitated by licensed clinicians trained in trauma recovery and veteran mental health. Common group formats include:
- Process groups: Open dialogue to explore feelings, experiences, and insights
- Psychoeducational groups: Learning coping skills, emotional regulation, and resilience
- Peer-led groups: Veterans supporting each other through shared stories
Most groups meet daily or several times per week as part of our intensive residential model.
The Power of Peer Support
Veterans often find it easier to open up in the presence of others who “get it.” Group therapy at Patriot PowerUP creates space for veterans to:
- Share openly without judgment
- Gain strength from others’ progress
- Challenge distorted beliefs about themselves
- Practice new behaviors in a safe, supportive environment
This communal healing is a key factor in reducing isolation and sustaining long-term recovery.
Group Therapy Within Our Residential Program
Group sessions are embedded in a daily schedule that also includes:
- Individual therapy
- Holistic care (nutrition, movement, mindfulness)
- Psychiatric and medical support
- Family involvement and discharge planning
Together, these components ensure veterans are surrounded by comprehensive, compassionate care.
